I break every one of the 10 commandments (and what I’m doing about it)

  1. You shall have no other gods before me.  Lord, how guilty am I of daily bringing other false gods into your presence.  Surely I am living proof that John Calvin was correct in saying that “Man’s nature, so to speak, is a perpetual factory of idols.”  I wrongly believe they will provide me with the comfort, control, success, and approval that I already have from You. May I be reminded today that the Living God alone is good, great, gracious, and glorious?  Holy Spirit, renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community of single-focused worship in a culture of pluralism.
  2. You shall to make for yourself an image… you shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.  Lord, I’ve never carved an idol out of wood.  Yet I daily find myself gazing at, longing for, and seeking after other things.  I exchange the glory of the immortal God for images.  Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community that worships The Creator in a culture set on worshipping creation.
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Lord, guard not just my mouth, but my heart from uttering profanity.  You are present with me always.  Let my words demonstrate that I take serious your presence.  Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community that enters God’s presence with reverence and awe in a culture of triviality.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Lord, a rhythm of six and one you have called me to.  How foreign it is for me to set aside that one day for worship.  I fill it with work, tasks, chores, sports, and errands.  Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community that works from their Sabbath rest in a culture that can’t stop consuming and doing.
  5. Honor your father and mother. Lord, my default is to worry about my interests right now.  That is what I spend my money on.  That is what my life revolves around.  But you call me to honor and protect others.  Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community that is faithful to long term covenantal and family commitments in a culture that abandons the elderly.
  6. You shall not murder. Lord, I have never murdered anyone.  But how deeply do Jesus’ words cut?  “I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.  I confess that anger boils in my blood more often than I’d like to admit. Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community that cultivates life and love in a culture fueled by anger and set on cutting others down.
  7. You shall not commit adultery. Lord, you know the lust in my heart.  The impurity in my eyes.  The scandal of my thoughts. And the error of my desires. Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community of lifelong (sexual) faithfulness, purity, & integrity  in a culture obsessed with sexual “freedom” and exploitation.
  8. You shall not steal. Lord, I don’t know that I’ve ever shoplifted or burgled, but I know that my failure to be generous and presumption upon my positions of power and possessions has had the same effect on others. Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community of generosity in a culture committed to personal gain?
  9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Lord, I lie more than I’d like to admit.  Sometimes I do it to save face, other times to cut others down, and honestly, sometimes to get ahead.  Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community known for honesty and integrity in a culture that manipulates and hides.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. Lord, why do I find it so difficult to be content with all that you have given me?  The grass is always greener in my neighbor’s life.  They have it.  I need it.  Holy Spirit renew me, that I might be an integral part of a community of “enough” in a culture calling us to constantly crave “more”.
