Get Your Hands Dirty (Love Thy Neighbor)

Many Arizonans have been to Rocky Point. We make the four-hour drive and as we enter town we do one of two things: we either turn right and head to Sandy Beach or drive straight and make our way to the other side of the bay to Los Conchas. We spend our weekend relaxing by the beach, eating great Mexican food, and enjoying a little rest. But what we all miss when we do this are the thousands of people living east of town on forgotten desert land that is situated between the railroad tracks and the sewer plant.  There are thousands of people who have come to Rocky Point looking for a job or a chance to cross into America, but have gotten stuck living in horrible conditions. But within this barrio is a thriving community who are aggressively working together to see poverty eradicated.

1MISSION is a community development organization that gives people living in poverty the opportunity to earn a home by serving their community. Families earn their homes by serving a minimum of 200 hours in their community doing a variety of community development initiatives which have been generated by local committees. Building their neighbors homes, working on the community garden, earning their degree and doing diabetes prevention initiatives are just a few of the ways that families earn their homes.

On October 14th-17th, Missio Dei will be sending their third team down to work alongside of locals to build a house for a family. This is a great opportunity for us to engage with our neighbors to the south, be exposed to a culture that we can learn from, and build deeper relationships as a community.

The cost for the trip is $300/person, but kids 12-17 are $90, and under 12 are free.

Please join us for this great opportunity to engage with people from another culture and to get our hands dirty!
