Psalm 103. 1-6

Genesis 37-40

Welcome to our at home liturgy for this week!

We are so glad you are here worshipping with us. This liturgy is for individuals, families, roommates, or missional communities. In short, it is meant for you. Feel free to use all of it OR some of it. Remix it. Make it your own or use it word for word. Many thanks to the leaders of Missio Dei Mesa, for helping curate these resources for us to worship together.

We are continuing our 40 week journey through the story of the Bible. We will take one story each week and weave together the overarching narrative of the whole Story of God. Today we are going to look at the Story of Joseph. This story stretches from Genesis 37-40 and reminds us of God’s constant presence and consistent pursuit of our good and His glory.

So, we encourage you to make the space to gather weekly with other believers whether in a home or shared gathering. This time experiencing God’s presence, being encouraged by God’s people, and being equipped to play your role in God’s story is integral to the life of the Jesus follower!

Pull up a seat you are welcome at the table!

Call to Worship ( V )

Psalm 103

“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being praise his holy name.”

Our invitation today is to read this passage together. Take turns reading verses if you have a few people with you, or slowly let the Spirit speak to you as you read these words and let them prepare your heart to worship the true and living God. Maybe even pause to reflect on some of the benefits of God’s gracious rescue.

Psalm 103

Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—

 who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.

Confession (X)

Hear our prayer

Most Merciful God I confess…

That Good news starts with a Good God who created everything Good right and beautiful. But it isn’t long into the Story, and every day since, that we realize that this world is not the way it was intended. Sin’s power has corrupted creation, communities, and even us. It doesn’t reign unchecked, but it is rampant in the world today.

As you pray this prayer let your heart be moved with repentance (turning from wrong ways of believing and living back to the true story) and filled with hope. Your God is not far away he is near and delights to welcome back all who turn to him.

Pray Slowly. Feel deeply. Let your mind wander to the ways this week that you have not lived out God’s intention for humanity care for creation, exist in loving relationships, and deeply abide with Him.

Breathe In. Breathe Out.

Most Merciful God. I confess that I’ve sinned against you in thought, word, and deed.

We confess that we have not loved you with our whole hearts, We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your son Jesus Christ have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name.

Amen

Assurance ( > )

Thank You.

The cumulative testimony of the four Gospels is that when Jesus Christ sees the fallenness of the world all about him, his deepest impulse, his most natural instinct, is to move toward that sin and suffering, not away from it. - Gentle and Lowly

Questions for Reflection:

How does it make you feel that Jesus moves towards you in your sin?

Is that how you think of Jesus? Why or why not?

True Story: Genesis 12-50

This teaching can be a solo experience, but it’s best served up in community. As you sit under the Story of God let your heart be moved with wonder, your mind be filled with God’s telling of history, and your hands be prompted to faithfully take up your role in His Story! You are loved friends!

Some Questions:

  1. Watch the video.

  2. What do you learn about who God is from the book of Genesis? What sort of things does he do?

  3. Read Genesis 50.19-20 “But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

  4. Reflect: Where have you seen this to be true in your life? God bringing redemption out of bad situations? How does this point your heart to Jesus?

  5. What are two specific things you think that the Spirit of God wants us to do after reflecting on the book of Genesis? Think about your home, neighborhood, or job? How could we be a preview Jesus Kingdom right now, in our city while we wait for it to fully come at his return?

Benediction ( V )

BENEDICTION

“As the Father sent me, so I send you.”

Jesus

Missio Mesa would you put out your hands to receive this benediction:

Having been reminded of the Hope that you have in Jesus, may your heart be filled with courage and your hands empowered for the tasks you are given this week.  Remember with joy that we are not only sent to make disciples by Jesus, but we are sent with Jesus. His very Spirit is with us, his resurrection power in us, and his love is moving through us. Receive these words with Joy.

Our hope for a new creation is not tied
to what humans can do,
for we believe that one day
every challenge to God’s rule
will be crushed.
His kingdom will fully come,
and the Lord will rule.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Optional: Journal Prompts ( > )

Take some time and process one or more of the following prayer prompts:

  1. Father, make me aware of your love. Here are the times that I can remember feeling your love this week_____.

  2. Jesus, Paul wrote: For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. Here are the things in my life that are competing with you for Supremacy.

  3. Spirit. Breath of the living God. Would you reveal where I need your transforming power? I’m hearing your voice and I think you are saying I need to pay attention to ______

Memory Verse:

Genesis 50.20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

A Word to Parents: Most of this years sermons (across all Missio Dei Communities) will be drawn from the stories that Eugene Peterson included in his kids Bible so we are encouraging everyone to pick up a copy. (Link Below) For today. have your kids read one of the stories of JOSEPH.

What this means:

1) Your kids can bring a bible to the gathering and have pictures to go with the stories.

2) You can seamlessly continue discipling your kids at home in the same stories we tell on Sundays.

3) You can do the activities on the last page of every story with your kids throughout the week to continue speaking good news through the Story of God!

Story 1 Starts today!
